ROUTE N°6 Passo Tonale / Mirandola / Valbiolo / Passo Tonale

This easy itinerary leads to the valley of the Rio Valbiolo. Its name refers to the natural habitat of the very many marmots that live in this place. It is possible to meet them along the way or hear them whistle to alert the presence of strangers and finally see them slip into their underground lairs.

From the Tonale Pass follow the dirt road that takes to the Hospice San Bartolomeo (La Mirandola) up to the junction to the Val Strino. Continue to the left on sometimes steep and sometimes more gentle stretches and reach Valbiolo Alpine hut. The return runs on the same road at first with a wonderful view on the peaks and the glaciers of the Presanella range. At the crossroads in front of La Mirandola go downhill to your left and - by the first switchback -continue on the grassy and tiny street that passes through the wide pasture up to the altiport. Go past it and proceed on the “Sentiero del Biotopo” (Trail of the Bio-mouse) deep into a beautiful softwood forest, continuously watched over by the opposite rocky ridges. As you get to the national road, cross it and take the dirt road of the Alveo Presena. After riding across the creek and climbing for some hundred meters, turn to the right, follow the pleasant keep-fit trail and get back to the Tonale Pass.
